Trump has long pushed for a southern border wall and likely feels justified amid the current migrant crisis in shutting down the government over the issue.
Over the weekend, Trump seemed to take a swipe at Mexico for inaction, claiming that the United States endured \u201cdecades of abuse\u201d:

While Trump may have the executive authority to shut down border entry, he sought Congress\u2019 approval on additional funding for a southern border wall. He only had a short time frame to leverage his Republican majorities as Democrats won the House during the midterms and would take leadership positions in the new year.<\/p>\n
