<!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc3-united-states-china-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc3-united-states-china-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG-spv-->{"id":1280039,"date":"2018-11-29T02:20:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-29T00:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/?p=1280039"},"modified":"2018-11-29T16:58:05","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T14:58:05","slug":"luxury-stores-miss-chinese-tourists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/de\/2018\/11\/luxury-stores-miss-chinese-tourists\/","title":{"rendered":"Luxury stores miss Chinese tourists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The falling value of the yuan could explain why fewer citizens are venturing abroad.<\/b><br \/>\nNEW YORK \u2014 There was something missing at the luxury jeweler Tiffany &amp; Co. in recent months: Chinese tourists.<br \/>For the second time in as many months, a big seller of high-end goods noticed that a particularly crucial demographic of its shopping base had made itself sparse, damaging sales and stoking fears of worse to come.<br \/>On Wednesday, shares of Tiffany &amp; Co. plunged 12 percent after reporting weaker-than-expected sales in its third quarter.<br \/>CEO Alessandro Bogliolo said that Chinese tourists have failed to show up, and open wallets up, with the same vigor that they had in the past.<br \/>Last month, the owner of Louis Vuitton noted the same phenomenon of dwindling Chinese tourists.<br \/>Shares in that company were hit hard as well.<br \/>Tiffany is considered a bellwether for luxury goods, which is why shares of Ralph Lauren and Movado also fell on Wednesday, even as the broader stock market climbed sharply.<br \/>Tiffany\u2019s third-quarter revenue rose 4 percent to just above $1 billion, yet industry analysts were anticipating a bigger boost.<br \/>Part of the reason for the surprise was fewer tourists, particularly Chinese tourists, at stores in places like New York and Hong Kong.<br \/>\u201cWe don\u2019t see a slowdown of demand by the Chinese.
