Korea will seek \u2018a new way\u2019 if US flouts promises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>North Korea\u2019s leader Kim Jong-un has said that, while he wants a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and is open to a new meet-up with his US counterpart, Pyongyang could reverse course if the US \u201cclings to sanctions and pressure.\u201d<\/b><br \/>\nNorth Korea\u2019s willingness to de-nuclearize and ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula is not unconditional and depends on whether Washington is ready to reciprocate Pyongyang\u2019s goodwill, Kim said in his New Year address.<br \/>\u201cI am always ready to sit down again with the US president at any time and will make efforts to produce an outcome that the international community would welcome,\u201d Kim said.<br \/>Noting that the denuclearization process is a two-way street, Kim warned that if Washington sticks to its policy of maximum pressure and sanctions, Pyongyang\u2019s patience will inevitably run out.<br \/>\u201c[But] we could be left with no choice but to seek a new way if the US does not make good on its promises, misjudges our patience, while seeking to force things unilaterally and clinging to sanctions and pressure,\u201d Kim noted.<br \/>The North Korean leader made it clear that going back to saber-rattling is not what he wants: \u201cIf the US responds to our active and preemptive efforts with trustworthy steps and corresponding behavior, [North Korea-US relations] will move forward at an excellent and fast pace,\u201d he stated, as cited by Yonhap.<br \/>Kim directed part of his message at neighbor South Korea, urging it to ditch joint wargames with the US for the sake of reconciliation.<br \/>\u201cWe will never tolerate outside interferences and interventions intended to block our way toward reconciliation, unity and the unification of our people, while trying to make our relations scummy to their states and interests,\u201d the North Korean leader said, adding that \u201csignificant\u201d agreements achieved during 2018\u2019s three inter-Korean summits could be \u201cregarded as non-aggression treaty.\u201d<br \/>A next step could be the revamping of the Kaesong manufacturing park, that served as a main symbol of cooperation between two Koreas until it was shut down in response to a nuclear test and missile launch in February 2016. Plans have been tendered to reopen the complex, with Kim now saying that he wants to reinvigorate the project, as well as a suspended tourist program to the Mount Kumgang resort area \u201cwithout any preconditions.\u201d<br \/>While North Korea\u2019s denuclearization has stalled since Kim\u2019s summit with US President Donald Trump in June, partially due to the US\u2019s reluctance to provide sanctions relief to the North, inter-Korean reconciliation is proceeding at a steady pace. Taking matters into their own hands, Kim and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in held a symbolic ceremony to link their railway and road networks late December.<br \/>In a recent letter to Moon, Kim wrote that he wants to \u201cmeet often\u201d to \u201cresolve together the issue of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.\u201d<br \/>In December, Trump said that he hopes to meet Kim as soon as even this month or February, describing their relationship as \u201cgood\u201d and even suggesting he might invite Kim to the White House.<br \/>However, US officials have indicated that the choking unilateral and international sanctions against North Korea, enforced by the US, are to remain fully in place.<br \/>\u201cThe US has no intention of easing our unilateral or UN sanctions,\u201d Stephen Biegun, the US special representative for North Korea said last month, noting that Washington, nevertheless, wants to explore other trust-building measures.<br \/>Think your friends would be interested?
