Directed by Enrico Casarosa, who based the story on his own experiences growing up in Itlay with his best friend, Luca tells the story of a young sea monster named Luca ( Jacob Tremblay) who dreams of what life is like above the sea, despite warnings from his parents ( Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan). He finds out for himself after he befriends a fellow adventurous sea monster named Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer). Together, Luca and Alberto get into all sorts of boyhood (or is it sea monster-hood?) shenanigans, including entering an annual triathlon in the hopes of winning a Vespa. Luca may not be the grand-scale spectacle that Pixar viewers have come to expect, but it is a delightful little film about friendship, with a hearty appreciation for Italian culture. Studio Ghibli fans will likely appreciate the film\u2019s whimsical, low-conflict nature\u2014the fictional town Luca is set in, Porto Rosso, is a reference to Studio Ghibli\u2019s Porco Rosso.
