Dev Channel members can now play around with updates to the Snipping Tool, Calculator, Mail, and Calendar apps for Windows 11.<\/b>
\nMicrosoft is rolling out updates to several of Windows 11’s built-in apps\u2014the Snipping Tool, Calculator, Mail, and Calendar\u2014to Dev Channel members of the Windows Insider Program. The company bills Snipping Tool as a new app that replaces both the old Snipping Tool and the Snip & Sketch apps to offer „the next evolution of screen capture for Windows.“ That evolution introduces a dedicated settings page; quick access to capture presets such as windowed, rectangular, etc.; and new editing tools that can be used to mark up screenshots. Perhaps the most welcome update for Snipping Tool will be its ability to respect the currently active theme\u2014previous versions of the app were restricted to light mode. Now it should be easy to take screenshots without blinding yourself in the process. (Alright, „blinding“ might be a bit dramatic, but „forcing yourself to squint for a moment“ doesn’t have the same ring to it.) That was actually a bit of a theme\u2014no pun intended\u2014for these updates. Microsoft says that Calculator, Mail, and Calendar have been updated to reflect Windows 11’s new design style and support dark mode out of the box. Those changes should make the next generation of Windows more visually coherent and accommodating for people looking to dark mode all the things. Microsoft also rewrote Calculator in C# „so that more people can contribute to it on GitHub!“ That probably wouldn’t be a selling point for most Windows 11 users, but considering these updates‘ current restriction to the Windows Insider Program’s Dev Channel, it makes sense for the company to promote the ability to contribute to a core Windows app.<\/p>\n
