\nDays after U.S. troops officially withdrew from Afghanistan following a chaotic and deadly evacuation process, school officials in Sacramento have confirmed that more than two dozen students still remain in the hostile nation. \u201cWe can confirm that we currently have 29 students, from 19 families, in Afghanistan,\u201d said Raj Rai, director of communication for the San Juan Unified School District. \u201cWe stand ready to support these students and families in whatever way that we can.\u201d Initially, school officials believed that there were 32 students still in Afghanistan, but were later informed that three students managed to get on one of the evacuation flights. Sacramento is home to one of the highest populations of Afghan immigrants in the country, according to NBC News. The office of Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.) has already said that his office was in contact with the San Juan Unified School District and has informed the Department of Defense and State Department about the students left behind. \u201cWe are pushing the DOD and State for an update,\u201d Bera\u2019s communications director Travis Horne said. Also in California, a San Diego family, including three students who attend schools in the Cajon Valley School District were also unable to get onboard an evacuation flight.<\/p>\n
