I, for one, welcome this new season with open arms. No month is more Autumnal than October. Leaves change, kids (and plenty of adults) don spooky costumes and we’re all overcome by a weird craving for pumpkin-flavored everything. October also means a whole new slate of movies, TV shows and Netflix Originals headed to the streaming giant. Some of these I’d never heard of before compiling this list. Others I have been eagerly awaiting. Before we get to the Netflix Originals (and then the Big List) a few highlights for fans of more classic fare. Jack Nicholson’s wonderful As Good As It Gets lands on Netflix on the 1st of October. It’s the perfect movie about how even very toxic people can eek out a bit of redemption and something that’s really interesting to watch in an age of “cancel culture.” We just rewatched this a few weeks ago and it holds up incredibly well, remains at once deeply awkward and hilarious, and is one of Nicholson’s finer performances. Other movies landing the 1st include the classic romance Ghost (fitting for Halloween), the historical epic Gladiator, the Malcolm X biopic Malxolm X and the wonderfully violent Léon: The Professional, just to name a few. Lots and lots of great movies join Netflix on the 1st. Fans of Kevin Costner will be happy to learn that both Waterworld and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves also come to the streaming service on the 1st. Fans of Robert Rodriguez can look forward to Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico. Okay, onto the Netflix Originals. Based on the 2018 Dutch original, The Guilty stars Jake Gyllenhaal and a pretty outstanding supporting cast, though Gyllenhaal is the only one of the film’s stars you actually see. It’s almost a one-man show as a cop works alone taking emergency calls as Los Angeles devolves into wildfire chaos. It’s getting decent reviews. This one sounds like the kind of show designed to tug at heartstrings. It’s a 10-episode limited series about a young mother who takes a job housekeeping to get out of an abusive relationship and finds herself facing new and unexpected challenges. Alright, finally a horror movie for the spookiest month of the year. Based on the novel by Stephanie Perkins, the movie follows a young woman who moves to a small town in Nebraska. She makes some new friends and soon discovers that she’s being stalked by someone. Fear ensues. The tables turn in this thriller about a young chauffeur who drives two women around LA for a night of fun. When he discovers their evil intentions he has to fight for his life to survive the night. One of the shows I’m looking forward to most next month is Inside Job from Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch and writer Shion Takeuchi (also of Gravity Falls). Gravity Falls is one of the best animated TV shows ever made, hands down, and if Inside Job is even half as funny and engaging and mysterious as that show I’ll be a happy camper. Truly, if you haven’t seen Gravity Falls you need to go watch it—with or without kids. Inside Job is about the “Deep State” and the workers who try to keep its secrets safe. I’m so excited… Another one I’m really, really looking forward to—and so happy it wasn’t cancelled— Locke & Key ’ s second season arrives in October. The first season was absolutely fantastic. Lots of great mystery, backstory, magical keys with different powers, nebulous villains with unclear motives. Just all around a very fun, very spooky mystery-drama that I’m really looking forward to continuing. A prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead ( which I reviewed here, and which I did not love), Army of Thieves takes place six years before the first film, during the early days of the zombie outbreak. Directed by Matthias Schweighöfer, Snyder is credited with writing. It’s another heist movie, though hopefully not quite as tedious as Army of the Dead. (It’s about 20 minutes shorter so we’ll test out my “chop off 20 minutes” theory of modern day filmmaking. Movies are too long these days!) Okay, now on to the Big List.
