In February 2020, the U.S. Treasury Department accused Deripaska of laundering money for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Deripaska told Forbes the accusations against him were a “mish-mash of total nonsense” and “just hearsay and unfounded gossip.” In 2018, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Deripaska and six other Russian billionaires and their companies for profiting from Russia’s “corrupt system.” The following year, Deripaska unsuccessfully sued the U.S. Treasury Department, then-Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Director of the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control Andrea Gacki. Deripaska has also made headlines for his ties to former President Donald Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort. In 2018, it was revealed that Deripaska had loaned $10 million to Manafort. The Russian government reportedly granted a diplomatic visa to Deripaska after the U.S. refused to issue a visa to him multiple times due to his alleged connections to illegal activities. Deripaska was worth $4.9 billion as of Tuesday, according to Forbes’ real-time net worth tracker.
