Both the governments and the media in chorus are now engaged in a renewed fear campaign focussing on the emergence of a\u00a0new \u00a0\u201cdeadly\u201d SARS-CoV-2 variant. Last June it was the Delta variant\u00a0(B.1.617.2),\u00a0which allegedly originated in India. And now it\u2019s Omicron (B1.1.529) which, according to the WHO\u2019s \u201ctechnical advisory group\u201d was first detected in South\u00a0Africa. According \u2026<\/b>
\n\u201cPartial lockdowns\u201d are already contemplated including bans on international travel. The stated intent is to \u201csave lives\u201d. In the UK, \u201c\u2026there are growing fears\u201d that the newly discovered Omicron variant, \u201ccould impact Christmas\u201d. A travel ban against Africa, using the Covid-19 omicron as a pretext, could also have devastating social and economic impacts on the African Continent, including the disruption of trade relations. Preliminary reports (see below), however, confirm that the ban in air travel is not limited to African countries. Sofar, the US, UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Japan, Thailand and the EU have announced restrictions on air travel. The latter are not limited to the African Continent. Moreover, airline stocks have tumbled on the US stock market. Is a lockdown (comparable to March 2020) on the drawing board, requiring stay at home confinement, social distancing and the closure of economic activity? According to Prof Neil Ferguson: \u201cthe Delta variant of coronavirus is 30% to 100% more transmissible than the previously dominant variant\u201d. (quoted by the Guardian). What he fails to mention is that virus variants are always \u201cless vigilant\u201d and \u201cless dangerous\u201d in comparison to the original virus. The country-level reports below suggest that the PCR test is being used to detect the Covid-19 omicron variant among arriving passengers. \u201cThe UK requires that travelers must take a PCR test and quarantine on arrival until a negative result is returned\u201d.
