With a seemingly infinite number of TV series on your ‚to watch‘ list, you may feel overwhelmed by the options available to you. That’s where our list of the best 20 shows on Amazon Prime Video comes in. We’ve put in the hard yards and researched the biggest and newest shows out there, so you don’t have to spend hours looking for your next binge watch series. The latest entry in our ‚best of‘ list is The Wheel of Time, Amazon’s first major flagship fantasy show. With the streaming service also getting a Lord of the Rings prequel series next September, The Wheel of Time is perfectly placed to show if there’s an audience for big-budget fantasy shows on Amazon Prime. And, given how much we enjoyed it, it should be a big success. If you’d prefer something that’s not fantasy-based, however, there are 19 other options available to you below. From comedies to drama and everything in between, there’s something for everyone. So go ahead and see what you should be watching right now. Alternatively, our best Amazon Prime movies list will have other content for you to enjoy. Based on Robert Jordan’s beloved book series of the same name, The Wheel of Time is a fantasy show that offers an intriguing blend of Game of Thrones, The Witcher and Lord of the Rings in equal measure. Rosamund Pike (I Care A Lot, Gone Girl) plays Moiraine, a powerful sorceress whose quest to find the Dragon Reborn – a prophesised champion who can defeat the Dark One – leads her to the small village known as the Two Rivers. When Moiraine and her Warder companion Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney) are forced to rescue five of the village’s young adults from the Dark One’s forces, they realize that one of this quintet is the so-called Dragon Reborn. Cue an epic quest to work out who this ancient warrior is, and whether they’ll be able to save the world from the Dark One. Expect plenty of drama, R-rated violence (it’s not a family friendly show), a dashing of humor, and plenty of fantastical elements that’ll wow and shock you. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 1 Another hugely powerful docuseries from Steve McQueen, Uprising tells the extraordinary story of three intertwined events that transpired in the UK in 1981. The first tells the tale of the New Cross Fire, which saw 13 young Black British people lose their lives. The second, set in the aftermath of the fire’s terrible event, follows the Black People’s Day of Action as families of the victims seek answers over the course of the fire. Finally, Uprising’s third instalment covers the events predating, and surrounding, the Brixton Riots, which flared up as a result of racial discrimination against Black communities by mainly white police officers. Each of Uprising’s entries make for harrowing viewing. Like McQueen’s Small Axe anthology series, though, Uprising seeks to document events while teaching later generations about the segregation and institutional racism that existed at the time – and, in some instances, continue to exist today. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 1 Medical dramas have been around for decades, but few were as riveting (and often times hilarious) as House was during the early 2000s. Hugh Laurie stars as Gregory House, a misanthropic, sarcastic medical genius (and slight drug addict) at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey, who was tasked with solving a new, inexplicable medical case every episode. Usually, patients would get worse as House and his team tried to diagnose them but, eventually, the titular character would solve the case seemingly out of the blue. It was an intriguing idea for a medical drama to begin with but, as the seasons went on, it started to become stale. Still, while this aspect of the show started to run out of steam in latter seasons, House made up for it with its complex characters, humorous moments and at-times emotional story beats. There are plenty of twists and turns, too, to keep viewers engaged right up to the series‘ final episode. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 8 Based on the weekly column of the same name published by The New York Times, Amazon Prime’s Modern Love is an anthology series that explores the concept of, well, love in its many forms. Each of the show’s 16 episodes (eight in each season) tackles a different love-centric topic – sexual, romantic, familial and platonic to name just four –and featured an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Ed Sheeran, Andrew Scott and Olivia Cooke. Modern Love is billed as a romcom, but it’s as much of a drama as it is romantic and humorous. It presents love and relationships in its greatest and messiest forms, and you’ll certainly be able to relate to a tale or two through your own experiences. If you’re ready to laugh and cry in equal measure across every 30-minute episode, Modern Love is the show for you. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 1 The latest Amazon Prime Video original series sees Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson try his hand at being a farmer. Back in 2008, Clarkson bought a 1,000-acre plot of land, including Curdle Hill Farm, in Oxfordshire in the UK. A local villager – known only as Howard – used to tend the farm but retired in 2019. Clarkson, in his infinite wisdom, decides to try farming the lands himself, and it goes about as well as you’d expect. Yes, Clarkson’s Farm is as ludicrous as it sounds, but it’s actually a decent watch. Sure, the Top Gear presenter still acts up for the camera a lot of the time, but there’s genuine delight in his face when he gets something right. You can’t help but smile when things go right for Clarkson (and helpers such as Kaleb Cooper and Charlie Ireland), and it’s arguably the heart warming TV show we need right now. A second season has been greenlit, so now’s the time to catch up if you haven’t caught it yet. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 1 Amazon’s animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s superhero comic series isn’t for the faint of heart. Sure, it may not be a live-action production like The Boys, but Invincible is full of blood, gore, violence and other adult content. Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a seemingly normal teenager – expect for the fact that his dad Nolan (J.K. Simmons) is the world’s most powerful superhero. Soon after his 17th birthday, Mark develops abilities of his own and begins to train under his father’s tutelage. It isn’t long, though, before Mark realizes that his dad’s legacy isn’t what it appears to be. It’s a slow burn to begin with. Well, apart from a specific scene in episode 1 that shocked viewers who haven’t read the comics before. Its subversion of superhero tropes, emotional story beats, and ensemble cast will keep your attention until things really start to pick up from episode 4 – by which point you should be fully hooked. Two more seasons have been greenlit, too, so there’ll be more Invincible content to enjoy soon. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 1 The Wilds is Amazon’s latest well-received production, and it draws heavily from some of the pop culture’s biggest franchises and standalone tales. Castaway, Lord of the Flies, Lost, and Mean Girls are all sources of inspiration for The Wilds, which sees a group of eight teenage girls forced to survive on a desert island after their plane crashes. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, and the first season’s cliff hanger ending means that there is lots of explore in the future. With a second season coming soon, we won’t have long to find out what else is going on. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 1 Troubling the boundaries between film and TV, Small Axe is a set of feature-length stories centred around West Indian people living in London from the ’60s to the ’80s. Directed by Steve McQueen, the first starred Letitia Wright as the so-called Mangrove 9 faced trial following the harassment of a black-owned restaurant by racist police officers, with another featuring John Boyega training to be the first black police officer in the London MET. None of them, especially Lover’s Rock, are to be missed. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 1 A new anthology series from Hunters‘ creator David Weil, Solos asks the question: what does it mean to be human? If you think you’ve seen TV shows that ask that very same question, think again. Solos approaches this philosophical query from a sci-fi angle, framing its standalone stories around various futuristic topics including human cloning, time travel, space exploration, and viewing other peoples‘ memories. With an all-star cast including Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Anthony Mackie and Anne Hathaway, Solos explores universal themes such as death, fear of the unknown and finding your purpose in funny but heartbreaking fashion. With episodes lengths between 20 and 30 minutes, it’s well worth bingeing one weekend when the weather’s not great. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 1 Inspired by the extraordinary paintings of Simon Stålenhag, Tales from the Loop is a thoughtful sci-fi anthology about a town living atop The Loop, a mysterious machine that materialises the impossible. The first season takes a tour of the town’s citizens, gradually giving us a sense of what life is like in this strange environment. It’s certainly approaches the genre differently, so check out our interview with showrunner Nathaniel Halpern for more on what to expect. Most importantly, it’s exactly the kind of hopeful television we need right now. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 1 If you’re a fan of full-fat sci-fi, Amazon rescued this ambitious space drama from the scrapheap, giving it a well-earned fourth season of dense, political and twist-y storytelling. This adaptation of the books by James SA Corey should be the next thing you watch if you enjoyed the Battlestar Galactica reboot, and wished studios would make more sci-fi shows that explore lofty themes. Season 5 is on the way, and the show now lives exclusively on Prime Video. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 4 The Boys is based on a simple premise: What if superheroes sucked? Like, really, really sucked? What if they were egotistical, selfish, corrupt and downright, well, unheroic? That’s the crux of The Boys. Now sure, many of those questions have been explored in other media, but Amazon’s over-the-top series does it with a visual panache and a bit of humor. The first season showed plenty of promise, and the second delivered on it. The Boys season 3 starts filming next year, and it could be even better. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 2 Mr Robot is Fight Club for the Tor generation, lifting a lid on a world where what Linux kernel you use is not just a badge of honor but a way of life. Rami Malek plays Elliot, who in his day job is a network engineer, while outside of that he’s attempting to bring down one of the biggest companies in the world as part of a hacker collective. It’s a stylish and ambitious show, with twists so big that they reshape the show’s premise over and over again. While its fourth and final season has aired on the USA Network, you can catch the first three on Amazon Prime now in the US. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 3 If you have any interest in Norse mythology, then the name Ragnar Lothbrok will mean a whole lot to you. Basically, he was a king and powerful ruler that terrorized the English and the French. Vikings is a series that traces his Norse-based goings on with enough charm and scope to take on Game of Thrones in the sword and sandals stakes. Yes, it takes a number of liberties with its source material but the acting is classy, as is the cinematography in this historical romp that’s deservedly in its sixth season. The first five are currently on Amazon Prime. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 5 Good Omens came out of nowhere and has swept us off our feet. Based on the book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens is an addictive, bonkers yet heart-warming tale about good and evil, friendship, demons, angels and a future-gazing witch. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s pretty British (in a good way) and has an all-star cast. The series can be binged in one weekend, or one sitting if you can’t face waiting a whole night for the final few episodes. For the bibliophiles out there, the TV series brings a few fresh characters and twists to the story, but is also faithful enough to the book to give those who have been fans for nearly thirty years a real treat. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 1 There’s a lot of Star Trek on Amazon Prime, if you’re in the mood to watch hundreds of episodes set in that universe. The original series is available, as are later entries The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. If you’re wondering how to watch Star Trek: Picard, though, you’ll need CBS All Access for that (which you can enjoy as a channel within Amazon Prime Video). Seasons on Netflix: 3 of TOS (and many spin-offs) Oprah’s recently explosive interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was certainly dramatic, and has shone a spotlight on the UK’s royal family that could have repercussions for months and years to come. If you’re after some more spicy British-based drama, you may be interested in giving Downton Abbey a viewing. Set between 1912 and 1926, this award-winning historical drama was the talk of the town on both sides of the Atlantic between 2010 and 2015. If you missed out on it first time around, now seems like the perfect time to dip your toes into the UK’s social hierarchy. There’s a film – released in 2019 – which ties the whole show together too, if that’s of interest once you finish the series. Seasons on Amazon Prime: 6 The latest series from Gilmore Girls creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel tells the story of ’50s housewife Miriam Maisel. After her husband confesses he’s been having an affair, Midge drunkenly gets on stage at a comedy club and discovers that she’s utterly hilarious. In a time when women aren’t encouraged to be publicly funny, Midge pursues her new-found comedic talent in the male-dominated stand up comedy world. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 3 Phoebe Waller-Bridge has created two of the best TV shows of the modern age in Killing Eve and Fleabag. The latter is her self-starring comedy drama, adapted from a stage show, and it’s a hilarious but sometimes painful portrait of a damaged person trying to keep it together. The supporting cast, which includes Andrew Scott’s ‚hot priest‘ in season 2, helps make this one of the best shows around full stop. With six half-hour episodes per season, you could binge it in just a few days. Seasons on Amazon Prime Video: 2 We’ll likely be seeing quite a few seasons of The Grand Tour, which is unsurprisingly a lot like Top Gear, given its trifecta of hosts. Amazon made a big deal about signing Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. If you enjoy watching middle aged men burn rubber in the middle of the desert, like a scene out of Mad Max: Fury Road, then this is for you. A fourth season of feature-length specials began in December 2019, beginning with The Grand Tour Presents… Seamen. Classy stuff. When’s the next episode of The Grand Tour? Expect it sometime soon.
