The jury weighing the white former Brooklyn Center officer\u2019s fate broke at about 6 p.m. It deliberated all day Tuesday and for about half a day Monday, and is due to resume on Thursday. At the start of the trial, Judge Regina Chu told jurors they would have time off on Christmas Eve and over the Christmas weekend. She has not indicated that she would change that plan if deliberations were ongoing. Unlike the first two days, the jurors had no questions for Judge Regina Chu on Wednesday. On Tuesday, they asked Chu what they should do if they couldn\u2019t agree on verdicts, and Chu told them they should continue deliberating. Potter,49, is charged with two counts of manslaughter after shooting Wright on April 11 during a traffic stop after the 20-year-old pulled away from her and other officers who were trying to arrest him on an outstanding weapons possession warrant. Potter has said she meant to use her Taser on Wright instead of her gun. Wright\u2019s death set off angry demonstrations in Brooklyn Center. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 A jury pushed toward the end of its third day of deliberations Wednesday at the trial of a suburban Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed Black motorist Daunte Wright, with no hint of its progress and the Christmas holiday looming. The court reported no questions from the jury at Kim Potter\u2019s trial, a day after they asked Judge Regina Chu what to do if they couldn\u2019t agree and she told them to continue deliberating. They got the case about midday Monday. Potter, who is white, said she meant to use her Taser on Wright rather than her gun. She is charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter. If convicted of the most serious charge, Potter,49, would face a sentence of about seven years under state guidelines, though prosecutors have said they will seek more. The judge has ordered that the mostly white jury be sequestered during deliberations \u2014 meaning they remain under the court\u2019s supervision in an undisclosed hotel and cannot return home until they have reached a verdict or the judge has determined they can\u2019t reach one. However, Chu told jurors at the start of the trial that they would have time off on Christmas Eve and over the Christmas weekend. During closing arguments, prosecutors accused Potter of a \u201cblunder of epic proportions\u201d in Wright\u2019s death in an April 11 traffic stop \u2014 but said a mistake was no defense. Potter\u2019s attorneys countered that Wright, who was attempting to get away from officers as they sought to handcuff him for an outstanding warrant on a weapons charge, \u201ccaused the whole incident.\u201d Wright\u2019s death set off angry protests in Brooklyn Center just as nearby Minneapolis was on edge over Derek Chauvin\u2019s trial in George Floyd\u2019s death. Potter, who resigned two days after Wright\u2019s death, testified Friday that she \u201cdidn\u2019t want to hurt anybody\u201d and that she was \u201csorry it happened.\u201d Chu told jurors that the state doesn\u2019t have to prove Potter tried to kill Wright. The judge said for first-degree manslaughter, prosecutors must prove that Potter caused Wright\u2019s death while committing the crime of reckless handling of a firearm. This means they must prove that she committed a conscious or intentional act while handling or using a firearm that creates a substantial or unjustifiable risk that she was aware of and disregarded, and that she endangered safety.
