Due to its widespread success, Sony made sure to keep supplying the console with incredible games, and the PS2 now has one of the most beloved libraries in all gaming. From tactical JRPGs to EyeToy rhythm games, there’s something for everyone on the PS2, including horror fans.
There are a lot of horror titles available on the PS2, and players can expect anything when it comes to these titles. Some are popular stalwarts of the horror gaming universe, while others have slipped under the radar of many fans of spooky games. The monsters are grotesque, the combat is stressful (if available at all), and the scares are constant in these haunted classics.
Updated on March 4, 2023, by Amy Cowley: While this list is rather comprehensive and includes obvious classic horror titles such as Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and Resident Evil, there are some titles that this list lacks, such as the incredible third installment in the Silent Hill franchise, as well as cult classic games that were overshadowed by horror giants. As such, this list has been amended to add more incredible titles to the original 10 to bring attention to these horror games that deserve to be introduced once more to modern audiences.
The Thing is from minds at Konami, and the game acts as a sequel to the cult classic horror film. The player controls Captain Blake, who is sent to investigate a strange facility where concerning events are taking place. This game can be fairly challenging, but there are many weapons available for Captain Blake to blast through Walkers and Scuttlers.
Captain Blake also relies on adrenaline injections to keep his mind from cracking at the horrific beasts he continuously comes into contact with. There’s a lot of nightmare fuel in The Thing, so it comes highly recommended for players that love strange, grossly held-together creatures.
A missing persons case, three concerned friends, and an overnight stay in a school—these are the main ingredients of this creepy survival horror title that plagues the PS2 to a somewhat tepid reception, but the game invoked enough scares to land it in the hall of horror game.
Five teenagers explore the dark hallways of Leafmore High School which is now plagued by mutated creatures at every turn while searching for missing friends and seeking an exit. As the game progresses, they soon uncover an ongoing conspiracy that the school is kidnapping students to transform them into mutated creatures. Each teenager has unique abilities to overcome the creatures, and there is even a co-op system to allow players to share the experience.
One of Capcom’s hidden gems, Haunting Ground offers a completely refreshing horror game experience compared to Resident Evil, placing a greater emphasis on the survival part of survivor horror. Players take control of the mostly defenseless Fiona, whose only option to escape encounters is through running, hiding, or sending her trusted canine companion Hewie on them.
While its gameplay is very derivative of titles such as Clock Tower, it still remains a well-established game with fantastic environments and an atmosphere that crushes the player with tension, wondering what new horror would await them around the corner. Even today, Haunting Ground still holds a special place in the hearts of its small but fond fanbase.
Resident Evil 4 is a favorite for many players, and arguably the most beloved game in the Resident Evil franchise. Leon Kennedy must find the president’s daughter, and he has to go through a lot of terrible trials to get to her. Giant ogres, crazed villagers, and leviathan-like lake monsters all try to stop him in the most violent ways imaginable.
Ammo is scarce, the stakes are high, and Leon’s hair remains perfect the entire time. Resident Evil 4 can’t get enough praise, and those who are yet to play it are in luck since the game is getting a remake for the current generation of consoles.
Siren, or Forbidden Siren as it’s known in Europe, is a definitive horror classic that is sadly overlooked in comparison to other Japanese giants such as Resident Evil or Silent Hill. An eerie, rural island setting filled with dangerous, bloodthirsty inhabitants, there is no denying the scares it brought even if the series has been largely forgotten.
Split into episodes and featuring up to 10 playable characters, Siren dives into the struggles of each of these characters as they grapple with the inhabitants of the island, confronting them with violence or being stealthy around them and making use of hiding spots. With its unique ’sight-jacking‘ mechanic to allow players to see through the eyes of enemies, Siren had many unique features and an interesting plotline, but unfortunately, some tedious moments of gameplay prevented it from reaching near perfection.
Silent Hill 4: The Room is psychological horror bliss, full of twists and turns that are sure to leave the player rushing to the store to pick up a night light. This game focuses less on puzzles and more on combat, while simultaneously ensuring that the player never knows what could be around any given corner.
Players will never be sure if what Henry is doing is real, if anything around him is real, or if he’s even alive at all from the beginning. Silent Hill 4: The Room is a must-play title for those who feel they’ve seen everything in horror games because there are plenty of surprises available here.
Players control twin girls through a haunted and abandoned village, armed only with a special camera. The story in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly does not continue the original plot from the first game, though that’s not a big deal, as this story is compelling and the gameplay is just as terrifying.
How these two sisters feel so comfortable around horrifying spirits is beyond understanding, especially when they are targeted for sacrifice by malicious entities. With well-timed shots, players can exorcise the souls of these ghosts and free them from this mortal coil, provided they can stand to look at them for long enough.
After the intermission of Silent Hill 2, the third game brought players back to the story of the first one, featuring Heather, or Cheryl as she used to be known, as the main protagonist who finds herself in the titular town after chasing down the woman who killed her father.
It remains faithful to the previous two installments with its third-person perspective, nightmarish other-world, and a slew of monsters the player must outmaneuver or kill. The game also includes puzzles, multiple locations, and grotesque boss monsters in typical Silent Hill fashion, all neatly tied up in one incredible scare-package.
A rare title that unfortunately fell into the background on release, Kuon offers a few playable characters and one haunted mansion for the chosen character to explore. Each character has their own story that takes place in the mansion, and each story is tragic and full of bloodshed.
Developed by FromSoftware, Kuon features stories inspired by Japanese ghost tales, and the game’s dark, brooding atmosphere really amps up the feeling of overall dread. The combat in this game is unique and full of flare, though the enemies are horrifying spirits of Japanese legend, so be prepared for that.
Cold Fear may present the most harrowing situation of all these titles, as the player controls the last surviving member of multiple teams aboard a ship in Russian waters. The protagonist, Tom Hanson, must unravel the mystery of what happened to his squad mates, all while being attacked by grotesque-looking enemies.
Cold Fear is one of the best-looking survival horror games available on PS2, and its graphical prowess only adds to the gruesome imagery Hanson must endure. It’s hard to imagine anyone being able to keep cool when trapped on a boat with killer flesh beasts, but Hanson is an ever-fearless protagonist that’s strong enough to guide the player through the terror.
Here’s a game with an unreliable protagonist, in more ways than one. James Sunderland just wants to find his wife, who was thought to be dead, but the nightmares of Silent Hill 2 are dead set on stopping him. That is, if James’s wife is even real, or if anything is real, which is something Silent Hill 2 plays with a lot.
The always terrifying Pyramid Head is a huge looming threat in this game, and James is often at the brute’s mercy when things get tight. Konami loaded this game with secrets, symbolism, and harrowing metaphors for all players who love a good mystery.
Torque is a prisoner on death row for the murder of his family, though he has no memory of committing the crime. After an earthquake reveals the presence of a supernatural enemy, Torque must battle his inner demons and prove his own morality if he wants to escape death.
The Suffering is a mind-bending journey, to say the least. The game has three possible endings, each with its own explanation for what happened to Torque’s family. This dynamic makes The Suffering very easy to pick up again as players seek the truth of what exactly happened to their friendly inmate protagonist.
Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented is the best Fatal Frame on PS2, with more ghost photography and playable characters. The ghosts in Fatal Frame 3 are spookier than ever, and the death scenes will leave players trembling and squeamish.
The game has 3 playable characters and will often have the player swapping between real life and a dream state, where all sorts of other nightmares can take place. Players who aren’t too keen on the idea of unseen nightmare ghosts always watching them may want to play Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented with a group of friends.
Silent Hill: Origins is hands down the most heart-pounding Silent Hill game on PS2, and it does not pull any punches. Before the events of the first Silent Hill, Travis Grady is in search of a girl he rescued from a fire, only to have his own repressed memories confront him.
The crackling of Travis’s radio alerts him of nearby enemies and adds to the game’s eerie atmosphere. Like the rest of the franchise, there are multiple endings of varying severity, and Travis has to keep his wits about him in order to discern reality from the „other world.“
Rule of Rose is perhaps one of the most infamous games of all time, a survival horror featuring a school overrun with children with Lord of the Flies-like politics. The studio was devoted to making a new type of horror that delved into the misunderstood terror of young girls. There were rumors of alleged content of obscene violence and eroticism that while proved false in the final product, still received a ban in the United Kingdom.
With a beautiful soundtrack, melee combat, creatures, and bosses, Rule of Rose falls into similar categories to Silent Hill while maintaining the uniqueness of its originality.

These horror games from the PlayStation 2 are the genre’s best titles from the console’s era.
