Key Background
The new numbers come at an important time for the Biden administration as it battles stubbornly high inflation and fears of an economic downturn triggered by the collapse of two major banks this month. Following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, Biden tried to reassure the public that the U.S. financial system was secure and their money remained safe. But despite these assurances, markets have remained bearish amid concerns of a wider contagion among regional and midsize banks. This is taking place as the Biden administration and the Republican-led House continue to clash on the debt ceiling amid several warnings that a debt default could be a serious blow to the economy.Big Number
25%. That is the percentage of Americans who have expressed a positive sentiment about the current state of the U.S. economy, according to a separate AP-NORC poll published on Wednesday. In comparison, around 53% of people felt positively about their own household’s financial situation.Tangent
The recent bank failures appear to have also soured people’s sentiments about banking institutions. Wednesday’s poll also found that only 10% of Americans had a “great deal” of confidence in the country’s banks and financial institutions, with 57% having “only some” confidence and 30% expressing “hardly any” confidence. The poll also found that 56% of Americans, including a majority of both Republicans and Democrats, believe there is too little government regulation of financial institutions.Further Reading

Biden’s approval rating is now at 38%, slightly above his lowest point of 36% last July.
