\nPakistan\u2019s former prime minister Imran Khan has been arrested. Police surrounded Khan\u2019s home Saturday in the eastern city of Lahore and detained him. A court in Islamabad sentenced him to three years in jail and disqualified him from politics for five years for \u201ccorrupt practices\u201d according the constitution. The court also imposed a fine of around $355. He was transferred to a high-security prison notorious for its harsh conditions. Khan was investigated about allegations that he had bought several valuable state gifts, including an antique watch given to him by the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, and sold them for undeclared profit. Mr. Khan has denied any wrongdoing. The judge found Khan had \u201cdeliberately submitted fake details\u201d to the court. After Mr. Khan was arrested on Saturday in Lahore, the police in several cities were put on alert in case his supporters again took to the streets.
\u201cHis dishonesty has been established beyond doubt,\u201d the court order specified. Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in April 2022 but remains the country\u2019s leading opposition figure. The court verdict will end his chances of running in upcoming general elections. \u201cImran Khan\u2019s arrest marks a significant turning point in the state\u2019s actions against P.T.I.,\u201d said Zaigham Khan, a political analyst and columnist based in Islamabad.
