Carey performed \u201cVolare,\u201d which was originally composed and sung by Italian artist Domenico Modugno in 1958, after singing \u201cNothing is Impossible\u201d \u2014 which is off her latest album, \u201cHere for it All.\u201d
Although not Italian herself, Carey is very familiar with the country\u2019s music, as her mother, Patricia, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer.
Opening ceremonies creative director Marco Balich revealed in January that the Queen of Pop was going to perform \u201ca beautiful song in Italian.\u201d
\u201cShe will enchant many of us,\u201d Balich said.
Olympic organizers said back in December that the Grammy-winning singer \u201cperfectly embodies the emotional spirit of the games.\u201d
\u201cRecognized worldwide for her unmistakable voice and for a musical legacy that spans generations and cultures, Mariah Carey perfectly embodies the emotional spirit of the Games,\u201d organizers said in a statement.
Ahead of the opening ceremony, Carey greeted the viewers in an Instagram post, saying, \u201cSee you in Milan,\u201d in Italian.
In addition to Carey, Italian singer Andrea Bocelli, along with singer Laura Pausini, are expected to perform.<\/p>\n
