Like Frankenstein himself, crafting ‚The Bride!‘ required a hodgepodge of songs from musicians of the past.<\/b>
\nDespite what its trailers may have you think, The Bride! isn\u2019t actually a musical. But it does have a lot of singing, though, and a playlist of singers that have helped shape its title character.
Said playlist comes courtesy of star Jessie Buckley, who told Entertainment Weekly music was a \u201cmassive part\u201d of her various roles in the film\u2014she plays the title character, Ida, both pre- and post-death, as well as Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley, and she \u201cneeded it all.\u201d Both director-writer Maggie Gyllenhaal and co-lead Christian Bale helped her out, and the three made a group chat where they\u2019d \u201cjust send each other different songs. Christian and Maggie are complete music nuts.\u201d
Such songs ranged from \u201creally dirty, naughty songs from the 1920s,\u201d like Ma Rainey\u2019s 1924 song \u201cShave \u2018Em Dry,\u201d to \u201cLadies and Gentleman\u201d from the rock band Spiritualized. During the interview, Buckley also listed off \u201cPJ Harvey, Sinead O\u2019Connor, Bj\u00f6rk, all these wild, incredible, punk-rock, 1920s tap music.\u201d One specific song she listed off was Joni Mitchell\u2019s \u201c\u2018A Case of You‘,\u201d which she found representative of the love story between Ida and Frank.
Speaking of Frank, Buckley says Bale based his character on Sid Vicious. Early on in production, Gyllenhaal said Bale sent her a video of the rocker doing Frank Sinatra\u2019s \u201cMy Way,\u201d and that\u2019s when it was decided, \u201cOkay, our Frankenstein is punk in that classic sort of 1981 London way. That\u2019s great.\u201d
