<!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc5-grasp-japan-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc5-grasp-japan-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG-spv-->{"id":583918,"date":"2017-06-21T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/?p=583918"},"modified":"2017-06-22T02:15:43","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T00:15:43","slug":"toshiba-picks-preferred-bidder-for-microchip-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/de\/2017\/06\/toshiba-picks-preferred-bidder-for-microchip-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Toshiba Picks Preferred Bidder for Microchip Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The size of the bid by a consortium with ties to the Japanese government was not disclosed, but the business is estimated to be worth about $20 billion.<\/b><br \/>\nHONG KONG \u2014 Toshiba has picked a consortium that includes a government-controlled investment fund as its preferred bidder for the company\u2019s multibillion-dollar microchip business.<br \/>Toshiba, the Japanese conglomerate awash in losses from its nuclear unit in the United States, said Wednesday in a news release that a consortium made up of the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan; Bain Capital, the American private equity firm; and the Development Bank of Japan \u201cpresented the best proposal.\u201d The size of the bid was not disclosed, but the microchip business is estimated to be worth about $20 billion.<br \/>Toshiba said in the news release that considerations included \u201ccertainty of closing, retention of employees and maintenance of sensitive technology within Japan.\u201d<br \/>Western Digital, an American data storage company that owns part of a Toshiba semiconductor factory in Japan, has also bid on the chip business.<br \/>The company said that Toshiba could not sell without its consent, and last month it took the dispute to the International Court of Arbitration, a tribunal operated by the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce that adjudicates corporate disputes. Last week, Western Digital sought an injunction preventing Toshiba from selling the business; a hearing is scheduled for July 14.<br \/>On Wednesday, Western Digital said Toshiba had \u201cno right\u201d to make a sale without its approval.<br \/>\u201cWe remain confident in our consent rights and our legal position and look forward to the hearing for injunctive relief, \u201d the company said in a news release.<br \/>Toshiba has not said exactly how much of the semiconductor business it will sell, and it has not identified all of the other bidders.
