Couple was riding on Gratiot in Chesterfield Township when accident happened
CHESTERFIELD TWP. — Two people were critically injured in a motorcycle crash at about 6: 40 p.m. Thursday on Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township.
According to a news release from the Chesterfield Township Police Department, a husband and wife were riding a 2008 Honda motorcycle north on Gratiot near Telstar when the motorcycle was struck broadside by a 58-year-old Chesterfield man driving a 1999 Toyota sedan.
Investigators determined the Chesterfield man pulled out on to Gratiot from Telstar (westbound) and struck the couple broadside. The Chesterfield man stopped immediately at the scene of the crash, along with several other people who witnessed the accident, and began rendering aide to the injured couple.
The husband, 59, and wife, 56, were taken to McLaren Macomb where they were listed in critical, but stable condition overnight. They were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
The Chesterfield man who struck them was uninjured and later released from the scene. He told officers he simply did not see the motorcycle as he pulled out onto Gratiot.
The investigation is ongoing, but at this stage alcohol, drugs, and speed do not appear to be contributing factors.
