According to a new report, Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock may have been targeting aviation fuel tanks during his attack on a country music festival Sunday night.
A knowledgable source told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that law enforcement found bullet holes in the aviation tanks across the street from the Route 91 music festival, suggesting that Paddock may have been trying to trigger an explosion.
The tanks are about 1100 feet from where the festival was held and none of Paddock’s bullets were able to penetrate the tanks. The source said that construction crews are currently patching up and painting over the holes and the FBI inspected the tanks and measured how far they are from Paddock’s gun nest in Mandalay Bay.
FBI spokeswoman Sandra Breault declined to comment to the Review-Journal as the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Paddock opened fire on the festival from the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay, killing 58 and injuring close to 500 people in what is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U. S. history.
