Google is adding a chat support to its mobile wallet service Tez. The service aims to take on Paytm and WhatsApp and is gradually rolling out to its 13.5 million active users.
The mobile wallet platform that works on UPI-based interface will now not only allow you to send or request money but also chat with your contacts. ” We’ve added a feature to Tez that allows you to send simple messages back and forth to your contacts about the payments you make,” a Google spokesperson said in a press statement conforming the roll out.
The feature is not available to all Tez users as the roll out is slow and also both parties should be on the latest version of the app to use the feature. The chat option is present beside the Pay and Request button. Just like in WhatsApp, you can also block your contacts and also disable your contacts.
Tez works with all banks in India that support UPI. The feature allows you to send and receive money, pay bills, online payment, and now option to chat on the app.
The move aims to take a direct shot at Paytm which recently added a chat support– Inbox– to its platform. The chat option aims to improve the users experience on the payment platform and also help keep a track of transactions history.
Google launched the UPI-based Tez app last year. The app helps transfer money directly from one’s bank accounts without having to share their personal information. The app works on both iOS and Android.
A war between the mobile wallets has become intense especially after the RBI’s full KYC mandate. The companies are looking into new ways to attract users. The chat app WhatsApp which has nearly 1.5 billion monthly active users also recently launched the Payment service to the app. Dubbed as WhatsApp Pay, the feature also uses the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for its payment service. It allows users to send or receive money through UPI-linked bank accounts. Only select users have received the feature for now.
Similarly, Paytm which is one of the leading mobile wallets in the country has expanded its horizon to chat service by launching Paytm Inbox, a feature that allows users to chat using messages and also share photos or videos.
