“What does the new OnePlus 6 bring to the table as compared to its predecessor?”
The OnePlus 6 has officially been announced by the company, and the first question that might pop up in your mind might be – “what’s changed?” Given the fairly frequent smartphone launches for OnePlus in the past two years, it might have become really difficult to differentiate new models from their predecessors. Moreover, the OnePlus 5T ( review) already introduced a radical change in design coming from the OnePlus 5, so the OnePlus 6 should be even more similar to the 5T, right? While these do seem like logical conclusions, there’s more to it than meets the eye. So what exactly does the 6 bring to the table as compared to its predecessor? Let’s find out.
Both the OnePlus 5T and the OnePlus 6 come with taller displays than the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. And while the size of the canvas has increased, the dimensions of the phone have more or less remained quite the same. The OP6 also carries forward the 6GB and 8GB RAM variants of the 5T, as well as the 3,300mAh non-removable battery. Once again, OnePlus has equipped its latest flagship with its Dash Charge technology to juice up the smartphone quickly.
Both phones also carry similar connectivity options including dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE, as well as NFC. In terms of cameras, the 6 and the 5T make use of a 16MP + 20MP primary camera setup at the back, aided by a 16MP front camera for selfies and video calling. Lastly, both smartphones run Oxygen OS built on top of stock Android.
First and foremost, the design of the new smartphone has been changed drastically. The back is covered in glass, the cameras now have a vertical arrangement, and the front plays host to a notch display.
Talking about the display, it is now a 19:9 FHD+ Optic AMOLED panel measuring 6.28-inches diagonally. In contrast, the 5T came equipped with a 6.01-inch 18:9 canvas. Meanwhile, the internals has also seen a bump, with the 6 coming with the most powerful chipset from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 845, as compared to the Snapdragon 835 SoC in the 5T.
Interestingly, OnePlus has also launched a 256GB variant of the smartphone, available on the special Avengers edition, along with the 64GB and 128GB variants. And even though the two phones are similar in dimensions, the OnePlus 6 is a good 15g heavier than its predecessor.
OnePlus also claims that the cameras on the OnePlus 6 are now more refined, with the primary snapper being equipped with a larger sensor and OIS. The brand has also built a few camera modes like Smart Capture, Advanced HDR and Slow-mo, which can shoot videos at up to 480fps. Moreover, unlike the OnePlus 5T, the 6 can shoot videos in 4K at up to 60fps.
OnePlus has built a cracker of a device in the form of the OnePlus 6. The device retains the things we liked about the 5T, and has still managed to improve in other areas. Support for wireless charging would have been like the cherry on top… but that’s just nitpicking. That said, if you own a 5T, you won’t be missing out on much. But if you own previous offerings from OnePlus or are looking for a loaded-yet-affordable flagship, then the OP6 is for you.
