President Trump’s plan to pull out of the Paris climate accord isn’ t going over so well in Germany, apparently.
On Thursday, a local newspaper there decided to run a headline on their front page that bluntly read, “Earth to Trump: F–k you!”
The powerful and vulgar statement was sent by the Beliner Kurier, in response to preliminary reports on Wednesday, which said Trump was preparing to back out of the deal.
The Berlin tabloid is notorious for targeting politicians and not pulling any punches.
Back in March, the outlet published an article about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which they labeled him one of the world’s most insane leaders and used the word “Führer” — a term typically reserved for Adolf Hitler — to describe him.
The headline read, “The seven looniest leaders of the world, ” according to The Jerusalem Post.
It drew strong criticism from the Israeli Embassy, who blasted the report as antisemitic.
Photos of Thursday’s front page were circulating on social media throughout the day following President Trump’s climate deal announcement.
“We completely agree with you Germany. Our deepest, deepest apologies, ” wrote one Twitter user, who was apparently from the US.
“Bravo, ” another tweeted. “I couldn’ t have said it any better.”
German chancellor Angela Merkel joined French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni in condemning President Trump’s decision on Thursday to back out of the climate agreement, which is made up of nearly 200 countries.
“We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated, since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies, ” the trio said in a statement.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also blasted the president’s announcement on Thursday, saying the move threatened economic growth and technical progress.
Several members of Merkel’s Cabinet took aim at Trump, as well .
“The United States is harming itself, us Europeans and all other people in the world, ” the politicians seethed in a joint statement.
