CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — President Donald Trump returned to the stage where he seems most comfortable Wednesday when he held a rally at a community college in Iowa.
During his speech, Trump provided a minor update to his proposed border wall between the U. S. and Mexico when he said that solar panels could be built atop the wall.
By placing solar panels on it, Trump says the wall will « create energy and pay for itself. »
The president also joked that because the wall will generate money, it might cost less for Mexico to repay the U. S. for construction, referring to a campaign promise that Trump made saying Mexico will also pay for the wall.
Mexican officials have repeatedly refused to make any such payment.
The construction of the wall was one of the focal points during Trump’s campaign last year and was at the center of criticism from opponents during both the Republican primaries and the presidential election.
Trump promised construction on the wall would begin soon after he took office, however more than five months into his term construction has not begun.
Prior to his speech, Trump toured Kirkwood Community College where the rally was held. Trump toured the school’s facilities to learn about some of the technological agriculture advances the school is making.
He was joined by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. Trump ruffled some feathers while talking about the wealth of Ross who is a billionaire.
Trump has been criticized for appointing Ross and other members of his cabinet who are wealthy, despite promising during the campaign to « drain the swamp » in Washington of elitists and wealthy politicians.
Trump appears to have changed his tone his those promises last fall.
« Those particular positions, I just don’t want a poor person. Does that make sense?,  » Trump said.
Wednesday evening’s rally was the fifth such rally he’s held since taking office in January.
