DANA POINT About 100 guests at DoubleTree Suites Doheny Beach were evacuated Monday, July 10, after a fire broke out in the kitchen.
The fire was reported at 11: 03 a.m. at 34402 Pacific Coast Highway when nearby residents in Capistrano Beach noticed smoke coming from the back of the building, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.
“As units arrived there was heavy smoke coming from the back of the four-story building, ” Kurtz said. “The fire was isolated to the kitchen on the first floor and was knocked down within 15 minutes.”
A total of 18 firefighters responded with three engines, one truck and a paramedic unit.
The 200-room hotel has an 80 percent occupancy and about 100 guests were evacuated across the street to Doheny State Beach, Kurtz said.
Fire investigators are continuing to look into the cause of the fire, which includes pulling apart kitchen appliances.
No injuries were reported among firefighters but one hotel guest sprained an ankle during the evacuation, Kurtz said.
The restaurant at the hotel will remain closed until officials from the Orange Healthcare Agency give the OK to reopen, he said.
Erin Roberts, a front office supervisor, said the fire made guests “a little nervous” but that everyone was back in the hotel by about 2 p.m.
“We are really thankful for the quick work of the firefighters, ” Roberts said.
