According to Randolph County Sheriff Ken Hendrickson, witnesses said Les Loranzan, 59, West Manchester, Ohio, was driving southbound on Ind. 227 when he ran a stop sign at the intersection with U. S. 36.
A 2013 Toyota Highlander driven by Timothy Siegel, 54, Centerville, was westbound on the federal highway, and Siegel was unable to avoid contact with Loranzan’s vehicle, striking its driver’s side door.
Both vehicles were in a field southwest of the intersection when deputies arrived.
Loranzan was pronounced dead at the scene. Siegel was taken by ambulance to Reid Hospital, Richmond, after complaining of back pain.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, Hendrickson said. The accident was reported about 4:50 p.m.
