Intel has confirmed that Spectre and Meltdown patches are causing the system reboot issue which popped up shortly after the patches were rolled out.
Spectre and Meltdown security flaws have put a lot of devices at risk around the world and Intel is working to secure the devices through patches, however, Intel has confirmed that these patches are causing the system reboot issue which popped up shortly after the patches were rolled out.
These Spectre and Meltdown patches can cause performance drops is already annoying and now patches for these security flaws are causing system reboots.
“We have now identified the root cause for Broadwell and Haswell platforms, and made good progress in developing a solution to address it.”
According to Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group at Intel Corporation, OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users should stop deploying patches as “they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior”.
In short, Intel is urging for users to not install these patches. However, Intel has assured that it is working on an updated solution for the security flaws that will not cause the systems to randomly reboot and the updated solution will roll out once the testing has been done.
“Over the weekend, we began rolling out an early version of the updated solution to industry partners for testing, and we will make a final release available once that testing has been completed.”
In related news, with so many devices being open to security flaws, Nvidia has confirmed that its GPUs are immune to Spectre and Meltdown flaws.
It seems that Intel will be having an interesting year thanks to the security flaws.
