Sony sells 5.9M PS4 consoles worldwide during holidays, tops 73M units to date

Sony says it sold 5.9 million PlayStation 4 game consoles during the holiday shopping season, bringing the total installed base for the company’s latest console to 73.6 million worldwide since launch.
That is down slightly from Sony’s reported sales of 6.2 million PS4s during the 2016 holiday shopping season. Sony faced tough competition from a resurgent Nintendo, with its blockbuster Switch console, as well as from Microsoft, with its high-end Xbox One X and lower-priced Xbox One S.
The holiday sales number for the PlayStation 4 was announced by Sony CEO Kaz Hirai during the company’s CES news conference in Las Vegas this afternoon.
Nintendo recently touted the Switch as the fastest-selling game console ever in the U. S. Microsoft is slated give more details on Xbox One sales during its upcoming earnings call.
