DETROIT — Before the surprise unveiling of the new Bullitt edition Ford Mustang this week at the Detroit auto show, a sleek commercial showed us the car in action as it raced against another driver to find a parking spot.
And Ford is offering visitors to its showroom display at the Cobo Center a chance to take the driver’s seat and film a personalized version of the action-packed ad.
In what’s sure to be a major hit at this year’s North American International Auto Show, Ford has a dedicated area in its booth that allows guests to step in and become part of the commercial.
A Ford employee guides you through a handful of stations where you are filmed in the Mustang Bullitt and spliced into scenes from the actual commercial to make it appear as if you star in the advertisement.
The commercial is then sent to you and can be shared on social media. You also received a digital movie poster of you in the role of Steve McQueen.
The Mustang Bullitt is based on the vehicle in the 1968 McQueen film « Bullitt. »
The shoot requires a waiver signature, because one of the scenes involves the seat jerking upward slightly. For children, the seat can be set so that it doesn’t jump.
The final product is a dramatic, nearly one-minute video that looks pretty close to full commercial.
The original commercial is above, and below is a version recorded in the Ford booth featuring MLive business reporter Paula Gardner in the starring role.
To take part in the ad, get in line early. It takes a few minutes to walk each person through the filming process, and lines could be long.
The auto show opens to the public Saturday, Jan. 20.
