Black Panther premiered in the United Kingdom on Tuesday to post the biggest opening day in the box office this year by earning more than £2.67 million.
The latest movie adaptation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has already surpassed several other notable releases (via ScreenDaily) from the superhero genre for the particular market. This includes Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Deadpool (2016) after they made £2.13 million and £2.3 million respectively.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) currently holds the biggest opening weekend from Marvel Studios in the United Kingdom. It made more than £18 million, which seems like a pretty tall order for Black Panther for the time being. In terms of the biggest opening day at the box office in the same market, Star Wars: The Force Awakens still sits at the top of the pile with £9.68 million.
The United Kingdom was one of the first to premiere Black Panther this week, alongside Hong Kong and Taiwan. The movie will officially open in theaters in the United States on February 16, and is projected to score more than $180 million (an increment from the previously projected $160 million) in the domestic box office.
Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler, is set two years after the assassination of T’Chaka, the ruler of Wakanda, in the events of Captain America: Civil War. The African nation is now in political turmoil and on the brink of war.
The cast features Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Winston Duke as M’Baku and Forest Whitaker as Zuri.
Black Panther will be the last release in the MCU before the highly anticipated arrival of Avengers: Infinity War on May 4. It has also earned the honor of being the best reviewed movie from Marvel Studios on Rotten Tomatoes.
