Nothing was off limits in his opening monologue, including Harvey Weinstein and last year’s envelopgate.
Nothing was off limits in his opening monologue, including Harvey Weinstein and last year’s ‘Envelopegate’ mixup.
After saying he wouldn’t joke about the #MeToo movement in interviews before the show, Jimmy Kimmel went ahead and did exactly that.
The words ‘Harvey Weinstein’ were uttered mere (and somewhat surprisingly) minutes into his speech at the 90th Academy Awards. He addressed the topics that have been making headlines in Hollywood over the past year, including the women who have come forward against the disgraced producer and the battle for equal pay.
‘What happened with Harvey and what’s happening all over is long overdue,’ he said. ‘If we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, if we can do that, women will only have to deal with that every other place they go.’
Kimmel continued: ‘We will remember this year as the year men screwed up so badly, women started dating fish,’ he joked, referring to the plot of the Best Picture nominee The Shape of Water (in which a woman discovers a mysterious, scaled creature that lives in a water tank).
Kimmel then gestured to the fact that the ceremony marked the Academy Awards’ 90th anniversary. ‘Oscar is 89 years old this year, which probably means he’s at home watching Fox News.’
He continued: ‘Oscar is a very respected man in Hollywood, just look at him,’ he said. ‘He keeps his hand where you can see them. Never says a rude word. And most importantly no penis at all. He’s literally a statue of limitations, and we need more men like that in Hollywood.’
But, on a more serious note, Kimmel also said that this is a night ‘for positivity’ and would shine a light on inspiring films ‘each one of which was crushed by Black Panther this weekend.’
He added: ‘I remember a time when studios didn’t believe that a woman or a minority of superhero movies. And I remember that time because it was March of last year.’
Kimmel also addressed that the ceremony had its first female nominee for cinematography, Rachel Morrison, and that Greta Gerwig was the only female nominee in the directing category (and the first in eight years).
‘If you are a nominee tonight who is not making history, shame on you.’
And not forgetting the pay-disparity story which hit headlines around the world, after Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams were paid disparate amounts though they were represented by the same agency.
‘This story really shook me because if we can’t trust agents, who can we trust?’ Kimmel joked.
So, yeah, he went in hard. Kimmel kicked off his monologue by addressinglast year’s so-called ‘Envelopegate’ mixup, where La Land was accidentally announced as the Best Picture winner when in fact Moonlight had won.
‘I do want to mention: This year, when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away,’ he joked.
