Apple is reportedly planning to simplify naming of its next iPhones. According to Guggenheim analyst Robert Cihra, Apple is set to make a major change in the way it names successive generations of iPhones in 2018.
« We think Apple may use this upcoming cycle to formally change its iPhone naming/branding pattern, » wrote the analyst in a research note. The analyst suggest that Apple may name the ‘cheapest’ iPhone it will launch this year ‘simply iPhone’. This means it will come sans any numbering, like iPhone 7, iPhone 6 or so. Guggenheim has also reduced its annual iPhone unit growth forecast from 3 percent year-on-year to flat, citing « softer-than-expected iPhone X uptake » and broadly weaker smartphone market demand in the world’s biggest smartphone market China. « It appears Apple ultimately cannot outgrow what is now a no-growth smartphone market, » wrote Cihra in the note.
This, he writes, will be similar to the recently-launched iPad, which is just called the new iPad. Previously too, Apple moved from iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and then back to iPad in 2017.
Last year too, Apple changed its naming series, when the company skipped ‘iPhone 7s’ series and instead launched iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X smartphones. Apple is said to have named iPhone X so as its the company’s 10th anniversary edition iPhone.
This year Apple is expected to launch three iPhones in 2018, these include:
* A 5.8-inch OLED iPhone (claimed to be iPhone X’s successor)
* A 6.5-inch OLED iPhone (claimed to be Apple’s ‘Plus’ variant)
* And a mid-market cheaper 6.1-inch LCD iPhone
Other than these, the company is also rumoured to launch its smallest iPhone, iPhone SE, at its annual developers conference in June. Speculations suggest that the company will launch successor of iPhone SE, which launched in March 2016, at World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) next month.
The alleged 4-inch iPhone, likely to be called Apple iPhone SE 2, has appeared in numerous leaks including US Federal Trade Commission’s listing.
