The origin story for Thanos is going to be central to Avengers: Infinity War. In fact, co-writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus previously pointed out that the upcoming movie would, in many ways, be a standalone debut for the antagonist. However, the months to follow revealed that directors Anthony and Joe Russo have decided to cut out most of the backstory because they felt it was unnecessary, relaying that Avengers: Infinity War will still play out from the perspective of Thanos.
For those interested in knowing more about the character and the events that led him on a path to destroy half of all life in the universe, Marvel Studios is bringing out an official tie-in novel that will introduce Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Thanos: Titan Consumed” will give fans the opportunity to “learn the origins of the most feared force in the universe, and see how Thanos became the Titan consumed by his quest for power” in the Infinity Stones’ cinematic timeline.
The tie-in novel is scheduled to release on November 20,2018, and will be penned by bestelling writer Barry Lyga. There will be 304 pages to go through and pre-orderes can be placed right now from Amazon.
Speaking with io9 in a recent interview, Lyga stated that the tie-in novel makes Thanos more understandable for the audience.
“We all know where Thanos is going to end up,” said Lyga. “We’ve seen the trailers. I wanted to show how we get there. It’s less about making him likable and more about making him understandable. A small distinction, perhaps, but an important one.”
Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters on April 27,2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3,2019.
