Macron Says He And Trump Have 'Special Relationship' Because 'We Are Both Mavericks'

The French president will visit Washington D. C. in the coming week.
French President Emmanuel Macron has commented he and President Donald Trump have such a strong personal relationship because they “are both mavericks.”
Speaking in an interview with Fox News Sunday, Macron told host Chris Wallace that he and Trump were “aligned on some of the very critical issues” facing the world, and had bonded over their unexpected election victories.
“We have this very special relationship because the both of us are probably the mavericks of the system, » Macron said on Sunday.

« I think President Trump’s election was unexpected in your country, and probably my election was unexpected in my country. We are not part of the classical political system, » he added.
The French president is set to visit Washington D. C. in the coming week, the first time during Trump’s presidency, The Hill reported .
The leaders are expected to give one another gifts, with Macron set to give Trump a sapling from a tree that grew at the site of a First World War battle, and Trump to give Macron some framed upholstery from a White House chair, according to CNN .

Speaking further about the relationship between himself and Trump, Macron added: “I think we are very much aligned on some of the very critical issues of the world, especially countering terrorism and fighting [the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria].
« I think we have a very strong, personal relation based on the different meetings we had, especially such as your president gave to my country for Bastille Day in 2017,” he added.
Macron also discussed Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he described as “obsessed by interference in our democracies.”
“I do believe that we should never be weak with President Putin. When you are weak, he uses it, » Macron told Fox News Sunday.
