U. N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said the sanctions would be announced on Monday.
The U. S. is expected to impose new sanctions on Russia following the suspected chemical attack in Syria that left more than 40 people dead and hundreds injured.
U. N. ambassador Nikki Haley confirmed that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin would make an announcement about the sanctions on Monday, in an attempt to send “a strong message.”
Speaking in an interview with CBS’ Face the Nation, Haley said: “Russia sanctions will be coming down. Secretary Mnuchin will be announcing those on Monday if he hasn’t already, and they will be going directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to [Syrian President Bashar] Assad and chemical weapons use.”
« So I think everyone is going to be feeling it at this point. I think everyone knows that we sent a strong message, and our hope is that they listen to us, » she added.
Haley also explained in a separate interview with Fox News Sunday that there were a number of responses from the administration, including “the sanctions continuing to happen, which you’ll see again on Monday. This lets them know that this not good behavior.”
The sanctions come despite both Assad and Russia denying any involvement in the attack, and follow sanctions last month that targeted oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, The Washington Post reported.
Alongside sanctions expected on Monday, the U. S. has launched strikes against Syria alongside the U. K. and France, with more than 100 missiles launched at three targets on Friday in a move Trump tweeted about on Saturday suggesting that the strikes meant it was “mission accomplished” in Syria.
