Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made it clear Tuesday that despite uncertainty swirling around the planned historic summit between North Korea and the United States, the State Department will continue to prepare for the meeting.
Pompeo told reporters at the State Department that he’s “continuing to prepare both our team and the White House so that, in the event that the summit takes place on June 12, we are fully prepared with the mission statement having not changed at all.”
When asked if he’s open to pushing the summit to a later date, the secretary of state replied sternly: “We’re still working toward June 12.”
However, Pompeo wouldn’t elaborate more on the president’s comments from earlier on Tuesday lamenting that North Korea had a “change in attitude” following a meeting with China. Instead, he affirmed that the U. S. is continuing to work toward having a successful meeting.
“I’m not going speculate about that. We’re continuing to do our work and lay the foundation for a successful meeting, and I’m confident we’ll get there,” he said.
“We’re working to make sure that there is a common understanding about the contents of what will be discussed. But I’m optimistic. But again, this could be something that comes right to the end and doesn’t happen. As the president said, we’ll see, and that is the place that we find ourselves,” he added.
The president admitted he was a “little disappointed” that following a meeting between China and North Korea, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to change his tune regarding the upcoming summit.
“I will say I’m a little disappointed because when Kim Jong Un had the meeting with President Xi in China, the second meeting […] I think there was a little change in attitude from Kim Jong Un,” Trump said. « So I don’t like that.
“I think that President Xi is a world-class poker player. And I’m probably maybe doing the same thing that he would do,” he added.
