June 13 (UPI) — An FBI special agent in Denver who accidentally shot a nightclub patron after doing a backflip has been charged with one count of second-degree assault.
Agent Chase Bishop, based in the FBI’s Washington field office, turned himself in Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest .
Prosecutors say Bishop, 29, was partying while off duty last week at a Denver club. Video footage of the incident shows Bishop dancing in a crowd of people. After performing a backflip, his gun fell from its holster — and discharged when he picked it up. A man close by was seriously injured in the leg, but is expected to recover.
Denver police are now awaiting the results of Bishop’s alcohol and drug test.
« We are filing this charge now rather than waiting until the [blood alcohol content] report is received, which we understand could take another week, because sufficient evidence has been presented, » Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said in the statement.
« If an additional charge needs to be filed after further evidence is received, we can file those charges then. »
The FBI said it’s conducting an internal investigation.
