Washington: Terming the press conference of US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Helsinki “embarrassing”, ‘Terminator’ star Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that the former acted like a “fanboy” of the Russian leader.
In a 45-second video which went viral on social media, 70-year-old Schwarzenegger said, “You stood like a little-wet noodle. You stood like a little fanboy. I was asking myself when you are going to ask him for an autograph or a selfie or something like that.”
Schwarzenegger hit out at Trump for using the news conference to sell out the American intelligence community, justice system and the country.
The former California governor lamented at Trump’s comments on the alleged meddling by Russian intelligence in the 2016 presidential election.
“You’re the president of the United States. You shouldn’t do that. What’s the matter with you?” Schwarzenegger added.
Questioning Trump’s stance on Russia, he asserted, “What happened to the strong words and the strength of Ronald Reagan when he stood there at the Berlin Wall and said ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall’?”
“What happened to all that?”, he further said, before signing off with a deep high.
Earlier on Monday, Trump endorsed Putin’s stance on Russia’s non-involvement in the 2016 US presidential election, insisting that he ran a clean campaign.
Addressing a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki after their summit, Trump said that there was “zero collusion” and that he ran a “clean campaign.”
The US President also mentioned that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign was “a disaster for our country,” while also saying that it had negatively impacted US-Russia relations.
Trump received massive backlash over his comments during the conference with Putin, with former Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel also saying that Trump had “failed America today.”
“I would not have said it the way John (Brennan) said it. John can say it the way he wants to say it. But as to impeachment, we’ll see how this plays out. That’s a congressional responsibility and the Congress must do what they think is in the best interest of this country,” Hagel was quoted by CNN saying.
While former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper branded the news conference as “truly unbelievable,” former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan called Trump’s comments as “nothing short of treasonous.” (ANI)
