A new hands-on video from Game Rant shows Kassandra going face-to-face with the stone-gazed mythological figure, Medusa, in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey.
With just about a month and a half until the release of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, fans have been treated to plenty of exciting content as Ubisoft builds up hype ahead of the game’s launch. This week, Game Rant had a chance to go hands-on with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and fight Medusa, perhaps one of the most infamous monsters from Greek mythology. The resulting battle resulted in several close calls as Kassandra fought tooth and nail against the high level foe, granting gamers an in-depth look into how combat plays out within the game.
The existence of Medusa was an obvious addition for Odyssey, as the Gorgon warrior has deep roots in Greek mythology. While there are many other Greek-based myths that have the potential to show up in the game, she’s the one most gamers would think of first. Ubisoft’s rendition of the character certainly does her justice, with Kassandra forced to dodge a devastating leering gaze attack that turns her stone, fight against multiple stone warriors, and utilize both melee and ranged attacks to take down the mighty Gorgon.
Gamers can take a look at the Medusa fight from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey below:
The video demonstrates how important it is to use combat abilities, with Kassandra utilizing the chaos ring on multiple occasions to knock down the stone warriors raised by Medusa. The most oft-used ability for many players will likely be heal, although the brutal prolonged attack certainly dealt the fastest damage to the snake-centric opponent. Unfortunately, devastating moves like this will cost more than one adrenaline point, forcing players to form strategies regarding how they’ll approach difficult fights like the one above. Of course, players can mix-and-match any unlocked melee and ranged abilities to their heart’s content, allowing players to switch strategies on the fly and see what works for each fight.
The Medusa quest was more than just a difficult boss fight, too: it all started when Kassandra saw an angry mob about to attack a woman, believing she summoned a mysterious creature. Players can intervene, saving the woman and following an adventure that will eventually lead them to the Petrified Forest. At this point, gamers have the option of following two different paths (and can even complete both) in order to gain access to Medusa’s lair. These choices – both through branching quests and optional dialogue – give players an opportunity to learn more about the world, explore what interests them, and helps give Kassandra her own level of personality within Odyssey.
If the Medusa quest is an accurate example of what’s to come in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, gamers can expect the world to be filled with quests that will force gamers to test their mettle through a variety of playstyles. While the fight against Medusa was difficult on its own, in order to gain access to Medusa’s lair players will have to travel by boat to a remote huntress village to steal a circular key.
This presents an opportunity to use stealth, or alternatively get Alexios or Kassandra very, very bloody. Of course, that’s assuming gamers decide to go to the huntress camp instead of investigating a separate rumor: Odyssey gives players options on how they want to approach quests, and this newfound freedom adds a lot to the experience. So does killing Medusa.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will release on October 5,2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
