Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, is planning to do her part to oppose the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
On Saturday, Clinton is headlining the « Rise Up For Roe » event organized by pro-abortion groups to rally opposition to Kavanaugh, the Washington Examiner reported. The Manhattan event will kick off a tour centering on defending the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which in 1973 found a constitutional right to abortion in some cases.
« See our uncensored, no-holds-barred live show, » the tour’s website says.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the Demand Justice Initiative are organizing the tour, which also has stops in Boston, Portland, Washington, D. C., Austin, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, and Des Moines. Clinton and her mother, who in 2016 lost her second bid to be elected president, are vocal supporters of abortion.
The tour is based on the concern that Kavanaugh could vote with other justices to overturn Roe. That decision invalidated state laws banning abortion before the third trimester, and along with Planned Parenthood v. Casey, it helped to form the Court’s current precedent on abortion.
Demand Justice’s Twitter account touted Clinton’s appearance.
Many Democrats and liberal commentators have criticized Kavanaugh since he was nominated for the High Court, from Sen. Cory Booker (D., N. J.) saying his confirmation would be « evil » to late night host Stephen Colbert mocking the name « Brett. »
Fellow late night host Samantha Bee also criticized Kavanaugh in a clip featured on Rise Up For Roe’s site.
« Now is the exact time to get maximum hysterical, » Bee said on her show « Full Frontal. »
The video goes on to feature other abortion activists and progressive leaders, such as Planned Parenthood’s outgoing president Cecile Richards and ShareBlue media executive Jess McIntosh.
« If we overturn Roe v. Wade, American women will die, » McIntosh said in the video. « That’s not hyperbolic. »
Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings are scheduled to start September 4.
