On Sunday, we told you that some Pixel XL owners have been complaining that they are unable to use various quick chargers on the phone since the device was updated to Android 9.0 Pie. Two different Issue Tracker pages were created, with Google dismissing the first one stating that the problem could not be fixed. However, the second page created did result in a Googler asking for more information
With the bug affecting quick chargers, Pixel XL users saw the words « Charging » or « Charging Slowly » on their displays instead of the usual « Charging Rapidly » that appears when a quick charger is employed. On the active Issue Tracker, Google says « Thank you for reporting this issue. We’ve shared this with our product and engineering teams who are investigating it further. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. »
Google says that the problem apparently stems from the Android 9.0 update, which prevents the Pixel XL from charging quickly using non-Power Delivery USB-C chargers. The 18W PD fast charger that came in the box with the phone still works, and the issue does not affect the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL models. Google’s statement seems to indicate that the OG Pixel is also affected by the bug.
« We’re aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie. The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks. »-Google
Pixel and Pixel XL owners should receive the update from Google sometime in the next few weeks.
