Police charged a man in the deaths of four people, including two police officers, and identified the civilians killed in a shooting last Friday in the eastern Canadian city of Fredericton. Police charged Matthew Vincent Raymond (48) with four counts of first degree murder, according to a statement yesterday. They identified the civilian victims as Bobbie-Lee Wright (32) and Donald Adam Robichaud (42). Police said the officers responded to a report of shots and found two civilian victims on the ground.
Next stop the sun – once we lift off
A last-minute technical problem has delayed Nasa’s unprecedented flight to the sun. The launch countdown was halted with just one-minute, 55 seconds remaining, keeping the Delta IV (four) rocket at Cape Canaveral, Florida, with the Parker Solar Probe.
This followed earlier trouble in the countdown. Nasa says it will try again today. Once on its way, the Parker probe will venture closer to our star than any other spacecraft. Thousands of spectators gathered in the middle of the night to witness the launch, including the University of Chicago astrophysicist after whom the spacecraft is named. Eugene Parker (91) predicted the existence of solar wind 60 years ago.
Texas tents for young migrants to stay
Texas lawmakers say they have been told the temporary tent shelter in far West Texas for immigrant minors will stay open for another month. State Reps. Ina Minjarez and Diego Bernal told the San Antonio Express-News that they toured the Tornillo facility last Friday. About 170 teen boys are being housed in tents at Tornillo. The US government opened the facility in June because its existing shelters were at capacity. More than 2,000 children were put in government shelters after being separated from their parents under Trump’s zero-tolerance policy.
Three police killed storming hideout
Three members of Jordan’s security forces were killed yesterday when they stormed a hideout of suspected militants that had been rigged with explosives, the government spokeswoman said. The officers had been chasing suspects in an explosion a day earlier in which a policeman was killed. Prime Minister Omar Razzaz portrayed Friday’s bombing as a « terrorist attack. » No group immediately took responsibility. Police raided buildings west of the capital of Amman as part of the manhunt. One of the buildings had been rigged with explosives, said government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat. She said three members of the security forces were killed.
Disgraced monk held for Coptic killing
Egypt’s public prosecutor has detained a disgraced monk, Isaiah al-Makari, on charges of killing a bishop at a desert monastery, his lawyer said yesterday, in a case that has rocked the Coptic community, the Middle East’s biggest Christian minority. The killing last month of Bishop Epiphanius (64), a scholar who had led the Abu Makar Monastery in Wadi Natroun, an area some 110 km (68 miles) northwest of Cairo, prompted the church to impose strict new measures on its clergy.
