HMD’s newest mid-range smartphone, the Nokia 6.1 Plus, will go on sale for the first time in India today. But is it worth its Rs 15,999 price tag?
HMD’s newest mid-range smartphone, the Nokia 6.1 Plus, will go on sale for the first time in India today. The device will be available only through online channels that includes the Nokia online store and Flipkart. The Nokia 6.1 Plus is priced at Rs 15,999 and offers an all-glass design, edge-to-edge notched display, dual cameras and stock Android Oreo as part of the Android One program, among other things.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus was announced last week alongside the Nokia 5.1 Plus, but pricing and exact availability details for the latter will only be known sometime in September. The Nokia 6.1 Plus is one of HMD’s most popular phones this year as it brings a number of premium features at an affordable price point. The phone has already seen a terrific response in China where it goes by the name Nokia X6, and we expect a similar response for it once it goes on sale in India today starting 12pm.
As mentioned earlier, this affordable mid-range smartphone packs a lot of premium features starting with an edge-to-edge display with a notch on top. The phone is more compact than the Nokia 6.1 and yet packs a larger 5.8-inch FHD+ (2280×1080) display. Thanks to the notch and slimmer bezels all around, you get an aspect ratio of 19:9. The phone is covered with a layer of Gorilla Glass 3 on the front and back that adds to its premium look. This will be offered in three colour options – Gloss Midnight Blue, Gloss Black and Gloss White.
Powering the Nokia 6.1 Plus is an octa-core Snapdragon 636 chipset coupled with 4GB of RAM. This is the same processor as one powering the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The new Nokia phone will come with 64GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 400GB via a microSD card. Much like most other Nokia phones this year, the Nokia 6.1 Plus is also an Android One device which brings pure, stock Android Oreo with a promise of timely security updates and Android 9 Pie and Android Q in the future.
The dual camera system on the Nokia 6.1 Plus includes a primary 16-megapixel sensor and a secondary 5-megapixel sensor. Housed within the notch on the front is a 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The cameras get some AI support as well which helps improve image quality and bokeh effect. The dual-SIM Nokia 6.1 Plus houses a 3,060mAh battery with support for fast charging via USB Type-C.
I reviewed the Nokia 6.1 Plus recently and called it one of the most stunning phone in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment. It’s compact form factor combined with an edge-to-edge 1080p vibrant 1080p display and all-glass body is as premium as it can get and puts it just a notch above the Moto G6 in terms of design. But the Nokia 6.1 Plus does not stop impressing us there, the phone is also smooth and powerful thanks to a very capable mid-range Snapdragon processor coupled with an optimised Android Oreo software. So the short answer is yes, the phone is definitely worth its price tag and should be on your list if you’re in the market right now.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus is a great option for anyone looking for an all-round device in this price segment. It is a complete package that is better suited to take on the competition than the Nokia 6.1 ever was. We don’t get to say this often, but we feel HMD hit the right note with the Nokia 6.1 Plus when it comes to pricing as well.
