A 13-year-old girl who went missing after her parents were found dead in their Wisconsin home may have been spotted at a gas station in Miami, police said.
Authorities have been searching for Jayme Closs since deputies in Barron County responded to her parents’ home in Barron around 1 a.m. Monday after a 911 call from an unknown person. The bodies of Closs’ parents — James Closs, 56, and his wife, Denise Closs, 46 – were found dead inside.
“This was a gunshot crime scene,” Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told NBC News . “We could hear yelling in the background on this 911 call. No one interacted with our dispatchers, so it was just kind of an open line where we could hear different things in the background.”
Fitzgerald said the call led investigators to the Closs’ home, but the young teen was nowhere to be found. She is not considered to be a suspect in her parents’ deaths at this time, Fitzgerald said.
“She is missing and endangered,” he said. “She is a 13-year-old girl that we believe may have been at this scene when this took place.”
Police in Miami tweeted early Monday that Closs “may have been seen” near the area of a Sunflex gas station at N. W. 27th Avenue and 11 Street.
“If it was her, she was in a black Ford Explorer with a possible WI plate of I60WER,” police tweeted .
Calls seeking additional comment from Barron County sheriff officials regarding the possible sighting were not immediately returned.
An Amber Alert was issued Monday for Closs. She is described as 5 feet tall and weighing 100 pounds with blonde or strawberry blonde hair and green eyes. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call the Barron County Sheriff’s Office at (855) 744-3879.
