A bouncer was among the 12 victims killed in Wednesday night’s mass shooting inside a California bar — he died saving others.
Justin Meek, 23, was working at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, when a gunman entered and began shooting around 11:30 p.m., according to his alma mater, California Lutheran University.
Meek, a recently-graduated criminal justice major, died “heroically,” saving lives, according to a statement from the university president, Chris Kimball.
“Cal Lutheran wraps its arms around the Meek family and other families, and around every member of this community of caring,” the statement read.
His Facebook profile is filled with photos of himself fishing and playing guitar.
He was a former Eagle Scout, and graduated from Cal Lutheran in May, according to his work profile on Wayup.com .
He is the third civilian to be identified as among the dead. The others are aspiring Army recruit Cody Coffman, 22, and Pepperdine University freshman Alaina Housley, the 18-year-old niece of “Sister Sister” actress Tamera Mowry-Housley.
Meek’s little sister, Victoria Rose Meek, 20, worked at the bar with her brother, and had promoted the Wednesday night “College Country Night” on her Instagram account, victoriarose_linedance, which included clips showing her twirling to the music shortly before the shooting.
“It’s Wednesday y’all so come get silly and Shake your Southside tonight at Borderline’s College Country Night!” posted the sister, a current student at Cal Lutheran.
By Thursday night, her account had filled with worried posts from well-wishers. “Hope you are safe!!!” wrote one. “Praying you are ok and for everyone who was there tonight,” wrote another.
