March 21 (UPI) — Facebook stored hundreds of millions of account passwords with no encryption in plain, searchable text where thousands of employees had access to it, the social media giant confirmed Thursday.
Facebook has since fixed the problem, the company said in a statement.
« As part of a routine security review in January, we found that some user passwords were being stored in a readable format within our internal data storage systems, » Facebook said. « This caught our attention because our login systems are designed to mask passwords using techniques that make them unreadable.
