Trump’s Popularity With GOP Bounces Back After Capitol Attack, Poll Finds

The share of voters who say Trump should play a “major role” in the party has gone up by nine points.
GOP support for former President Donald Trump has gone up since the attack on the U.S. Capitol building that sparked an initial backlash against him, a new Morning Consult poll finds, as Republicans increasingly signal their support for Trump and his wing of the party as his Senate impeachment trial approaches.18. That’s the percentage of Republicans who said Jan.22-25 they would approve if the U.S. Senate convicts Trump at his impeachment trial, as compared with 14% who said the same when asked Jan.8-11 and 20% who supported conviction Jan.15-17.55% of voters overall would approve if Trump were convicted, which is largely unchanged from earlier in January. Trump has consistently been popular with the GOP in polling throughout his presidency, but the now-former president saw his approval rating and polling plunge in the wake of the Capitol attack, as many blamed him for inciting the violence.
