California's $600 Stimulus Checks: When They'll Arrive and How to Track Yours

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a coronavirus stimulus package into law on February 23 that includes one-time direct payments of $600 to millions of qualifying residents across the state. Some 5.7 million Californians are eligible for the payments, including people receiving California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), along with those who currently qualify under multiple existing federal assistance programs. The $600 payments are part of the state’s $7.6 billion COVID-19 relief package, which includes $2.1 billion in grants and fee waivers for small businesses. While some residents have already begun receiving the $600 direct payments starting on April 15, others might have to wait up to six weeks or longer. California residents who fall within the following categories are qualified to receive the $600 payment: CalEITC is available to state tax filers who earn less than $30,000 a year. In order to qualify for a stimulus payment this way, residents will need to file a 2020 tax return. Residents can check whether they qualify for CalEITC at the California Department of Community Services & Development website. The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) started sending out the $600 payments to CalEITC recipients on Thursday, April 15. Those who qualify for the stimulus will receive their payment in the same way they receive their tax refund. However, the timing of those payments depends on when you filed your tax return.
