India may lend 'cautious support' to China's global AI body proposal

India may lend cautious support to China’s proposal to establish a multilateral organisation focused on global AI cooperation and governance even if it doesn’t join it, officials told ET.Talks on global AI governance will be on the agenda during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) leaders’ summit later this week, they added.The move may bring the two nations, harboring major AI aspirations, closer on the frontier technology at a time when bilateral relations with the US have hit the tariffs snag.PM Modi is expected to discuss a wide range of multilateral issues with fellow SCO leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin during his upcoming visit to China’s Tianjin – the first in seven years.But this year’s SCO leaders’ declaration, which is usually released after consensus, may feature China’s proposal for member nations to draw nearer on AI, and a push to popularize its newly created World AI Cooperation Organization (WICO), an official said. »India’s response will be calibrated, but we have always pushed for a greater global cooperation that manages risks as well as promotes innovation,” said an official, who declined to be named.
