Allison and Tasuku Honjo \u201cfor their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.\u201d pic.twitter.com\/gk69W1ZLNI<br \/>Dr Wolchok said \u201can untold number of lives \u2026 have been saved by the science that they pioneered\u201d.<br \/>The approach to cancer treatment that was honoured with this year\u2019s Nobel was used to treat former US president Jimmy Carter, who was diagnosed in 2015 with melanoma, which had spread to his brain.<br \/>One of Mr Carter\u2019s treatments was a drug that blocked the immune-cell \u201cbrake\u201d studied by Mr Honjo.<br \/>Mr Carter announced in 2016 that he no longer needed treatment.<br \/>Although the concept of using the immune system against cancer arose in the 19th century, initial treatments based on the approach were only modestly effective.<br \/>\u201cEverybody wanted to do chemotherapy and radiation. <br \/>\u201cThe immune system was neglected because there was no strong evidence it could be effective,\u201d said Nadia Guerra, head of a cancer laboratory at Imperial College London.<br \/>Dr Allison\u2019s work, much of it done at the University of California-Berkeley, changed that by proving the immune system could identify tumour cells and act against them.<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s like your body uses your own army to fight cancer,\u201d she said.<br \/>Dr Allison studied a known protein and developed the concept into a new treatment approach, while Honjo discovered a new protein that also operated as a brake on immune cells.<br \/>\u201cI\u2019m honoued and humbled to receive this prestigious recognition,\u201d Dr Allison said in a statement released by the university\u2019s M. D.
