<!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc5-grasp-china-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG:--><!--DEBUG:dc5-grasp-china-in-english-pdf--><!--DEBUG-spv-->{"id":1244306,"date":"2018-11-03T06:15:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-03T04:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/?p=1244306"},"modified":"2018-11-04T03:21:57","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T01:21:57","slug":"australias-trade-minister-simon-birmingham-to-visit-china-in-sign-of-thaw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nhub.news\/fr\/2018\/11\/australias-trade-minister-simon-birmingham-to-visit-china-in-sign-of-thaw\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s trade minister Simon Birmingham to visit China in sign of thaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Visit to Shanghai for International Import Expo is first high-level ministerial trip in over a yearTwo countries have been at loggerheads amid fears of China\u2019s influence over Australian media, universities and politics<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia\u2019s trade minister will travel to China on Sunday, in a sign that political tensions between the two countries may be easing.<br \/>Simon Birmingham, the first senior Australian government official to visit China in a year, will attend the China International Import Expo, or CIEE, seen as an attempt by Beijing to allay foreign concern about its trade practices.<br \/>Relations between Australia and the world\u2019s number two economy have been at low ebb over accusations of China\u2019s influence in Australia\u2019s media, universities and politics and its use of loans to build leverage over poorer South Pacific island nations.<br \/>In August, Australia banned Huawei from supplying equipment for a 5G mobile network citing national security risks, a move the Chinese telecoms gear maker criticised as being \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d.<br \/>China, however, remains Australia\u2019s top goods and services trading partner, accounting for 24 per cent, or A$183.4 billion (US$132 billion), of total trade in 2017, according to data from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.<br \/>Birmingham said in a statement on Saturday that Australia\u2019s \u201chigh-level\u201d delegation, which includes representation from state and territory governments, \u201creflects our ongoing commitment to our relationship with China\u201d.<br \/>The minister\u2019s press office would not immediately comment on whether Birmingham would meet with any senior Chinese officials on his trip to Shanghai.<br \/>Later in the week, Birmingham will visit Hong Kong where he is expected to meet with Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau, \u201cto move forward negotiations on the Australia-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement\u201d.<br \/>Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to open the CIEE with a speech on Monday.
